Prof. Simon S.M. Ho joined the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU)
as Dean of the School of Business in January 2004.
Before joining HKBU, he taught at the School of Accountancy of The
Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for more than 20 years. He
served as Director of the Centre for Accounting Disclosure and
Corporate Governance from 1998 to 2004 and Director of the School of
Accountancy at CUHK from 1995-2002. Under his leadership, CUHK
became the first accounting school outside North America to receive
the AACSB accreditation in 1998.
He was born and received basic education in Hong Kong. He obtained a
BBA degree from the University of Washington (USA), a M.Sc. degree
(with distinction) in Information Systems from the London School of
Economics (UK), and a Ph.D. degree in Accounting from the University
of Bradford (UK). He is a member of several professional
organizations in accounting, information systems and financial
planning.
Before joining the Chinese University in 1992, he was an audit staff
at a certified public accountant’s firm, a financial system analyst
and assistant consultant at the Hong Kong Productivity Council. He
was Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the 2002 IAAER World
Congress of Accounting Educators, Member of the Public Education
Committee of Independent Commission Against Corruption,
Editor-in-Chief of the Hong Kong Journal of Business Management,
Guest Editor of the Management Accounting Research, and
member of several committees of Hong Kong Society of Accountants.
Among major outside services, he is currently Chairman of the Hong
Kong Corporate Governance Council, Member of the Accountancy
Training Board of the Vocational Training Council, Member of the
Inland Revenue Department Board of Review, Honorary Professor of
Henan University, External Assessor of the Research Grant Council,
the Vice President of the International Association for Accounting
Education & Research (IAAER), Member of Advisory Board of the
Asia-Pacific Conference on International Issues, Council Member of
Asian Academic Accounting Association, Founding President and
Council Member of Hong Kong Academic Accounting Association, and
Foreign Advisors of the Japanese Institute of International
Accounting and the Chinese Accounting Professors Association (CAPA).
He has been serving as a consultant or advisor to a number of
companies and non-profit organizations including Hong Kong Women’s
Council, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Independent Commission
Against Corruptions, Hong Kong Youth Institute, and Hong Kong
Police. Currently he is also a Senior Advisor to the Shenzhen GTA
Co. Ltd.
His major research interests include financial reporting and
disclosure issues, corporate governance, strategic risk taking,
business and professional ethics. He publishes in many international
refereed journals and is a columnist in the local financial
newspaper Hong Kong Economic Journal. His recent works on
corporate governance, family ownership and disclosure in the region
have received wide attention and several awards.
