Associate Professor of Accounting (Practice) Themin Suwardy PhD is the Associate Dean (Curriculum and Teaching) and MPA Programme Director at School of Accountancy, Singapore Management University. Prior to joining academia, Themin was an auditor with KPMG Peat Marwick. At SMU, he is currently a faculty in the Bachelor of Accountancy, Master of Professional Accounting, Master of Science in Applied Finance and Master of Business Administration programmes.
Besides his teaching and administrative duties at the University, Themin is the faculty champion of a number of SMU IT projects, notably “Virtual Canvas” (MIS Asia’s 2006 Best IT Enabler in Education) and “HeuCampus VLC”. He has created many e-learning objects in Accounting and was a recipient of the 2004 Hewlett-Packard Mobile Technology for Teaching Grant Initiative. At SMU, he was named the School of Accountancy's 2005 and 2010 Outstanding Teacher, 2006 SMU Most Innovative Teacher, 2009 and 2010 Best MBA (Core) teacher and 2010 SMU Distinguished Teacher. He was also the inaugural recipient of the CEEMAN's Champion teaching award in 2010.
Themin has just completed a research project on the role of Continuing Professional Development for the IAAER/ACCA Grant Program for Research on International Accounting Education Standards. His latest book is the global edition of Harrison and Horngren textbook, "Financial Accounting: International Reporting Standards", published by Pearson Education.
Themin is actively involved in various committees of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) and CPA Australia. He serves as an elected Councilor (2011 Deputy President) of CPA Australia (Singapore Division) and charis its Joint University Committee. He is an elected Governor of the Institute of Internal Auditors (Singapore). Themin also serves as Vice-President (Membership) of the International Association for Accounting Education and Research.
Themin has also conducted a number of talks and courses for the CPA Australia, Singapore Institute of Directors, Singapore Airlines, DFS Group, Singapore Accountant General’s Department, and National Institute of Education. His main research areas include financial reporting and analysis, corporate governance, accounting education with emphasis on technologically-enabled pedagogy.
