Dr. Cheng is a full professor of accounting at the E.J. Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University (LSU) where she holds the Ourso Distinguished Chair in Accounting. She starts her appointment of LSU in August 2007 and is appointed as the Ph.D. program director. She received her Ph.D. degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1983. She joined the University of Houston in 1986 and has taught there for 21 years. During the period, she visited the University of Arkansas from 1999 to 2000 and served as a visiting scholar to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from 2004-2005.
Dr. Cheng’s current research interest focuses on empirical financial accounting research. Her published work includes a research monograph (Studies in Accounting Research #29, published by American Accounting Association) and numerous articles. She has published articles in journals such as Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Decision Sciences, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of International Business Studies, Accounting and Business Research, Journal of Management Accounting Research and many others. Dr. Cheng’s editorial service includes the editorial advisory and review board of The Accounting Review from 1992 to 1995, associate editor for The Review of Business Studies in 1994-1996, associate editor for International Journal of Business in 1997-1999, the editorial board of The International Journal of Accounting from 1998 to 2000 and the editorial board of Asian Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics from 2002-2004. She is currently serving on the editorial board of Management Accounting Research (MAR), Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Economics (JCAE), Review of Pacific Basin Financial Markets and Policies (RPBFMP) and Journal of International Accounting.
Dr. Cheng has been an active member of the American Accounting Association (AAA) and the International Accounting Section. She chaired the 1996-97 Distinguished International Faculty Exchange Committee for AAA and the 1996-1997 Section Outreach Committee for the International Accounting Section. She served as a council member for the AAA in 1997-1999 and as the vice president-international in 1999-2001. Dr. Cheng plays a key role in AAA’s globalization effort. She organized one international conference in China, three AAA Globalization conferences (in Taiwan, United Kingdom and Germany) and several global roundtable meetings. Dr. Cheng is also very active among associations targeted to the Asian region. She served as the president for the Chinese Accounting Professor Association of North America (CAPANA) in 1995. She has served as an external examiner for the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has lead an accounting delegation to China for the People to People Ambassador programs in Spring 2003. She also serves on the Houston Advisory Board of the Asia Society. From 2001-2006, she served as the VP-international conferences for the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER). She currently serves as a vice-president of IAAER and is in charge of membership development.
Dr. Cheng currently serves as the outside Director of Research & Technical Activities for GLO CPAs, LLP. She helps GLO in skills and knowledge development on derivatives and fair value accounting. She also advises on issues related to financial reporting by public companies.
