Martin Hoogendoorn is Professor in Financial Accounting at the Erasmus University Rotterdam since 2003. From 1993 – 2002 he had the same position at the University of Amsterdam. At the Erasmus University he is responsible for the postgraduate part-time education to become a registeraccountant (chartered accountant). He also teaches at the postgraduate part-time education of registercontroller (chartered controller).
Martin is for the most part of his time a partner at Ernst & Young Accountants, where he works on the professional practice department. He is deeply involved in auditing the application of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
From 1988 – 2006 Martin has served on the Dutch Accounting Standards Board (DASB), being the chairman from 2001 – 2006. He is currently a judge at the Enterprise Chamber, a specialised court in Amsterdam dealing with corporate governance matters, including the application of Dutch GAAP and IFRS.
Furthermore, Martin is the chairman of the only scientific accounting journal in The Netherlands, the Maandblad voor Accountancy en Bedrijfseconomie (Dutch language). He is also on the editorial board of Accounting in Europe and he has served on the editorial board of the European Accounting Review. Furthermore, he is a member of the EAA Financial Reporting Standards Committee.
Martin has received his Ph.D. in 1990 at the Erasmus University. The subject of his Ph.D. was the reason for companies to change accounting policies. He is author of numerous books, both textbooks and monographs, he has published many articles on accounting issues, most of them in Dutch language journals. His specific research interests include earnings management, fair value accounting, and standard-setting. His article on income smoothing in 1985 was awarded with a prize for the best article published by a young registeraccountant. In 2006 he received the prestigious Limperg Penning for his activities on combining accounting research and accounting practice.
