In Italy he has previously taught at the Universities of Venice and Padua.

Coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in Economics and Management (2008-10) and Director of the “CFO Master Programme” at the University of Ferrara.

Chair of the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) Interdisciplinary Workshops Series on “Intangibles, Intellectual Capital and Extra-Financial Information” held annually from 2005 onwards in various European Universities (2005, Ferrara; 2006, Maastricht; 2007, Ferrara; 2008, Hasselt; 2009, Dresda; 2010, Catania; 2011, Warsaw; 2012, Grenoble).

Coordinator of the EDEN-EIASM Doctoral and Young Scholar School on "Visualising, Managing and Measuring Intangibles and Intellectual Capital" held annually from 2010 onwards in various European Universities (2010, Catania; 2011, Warsaw).

Visiting positions at London Business School; ESCP, HEC, and CNAM in Paris; the Universities of Reading, Melbourne, Boston (BU), Metz, Canterbury (New Zealand), Waseda (Tokyo), Bolzano/Bozen, and the Stern School of Business (NYU).

Member of the Executive Committee of the European Accounting Association (1998-2003), as well as Chair of its Conference Committee (1998-2003). Member of the Scientific Committee of several Annual Congresses of the same Association.

Member or former member of the editorial boards of the European Accounting Review, Comptabilité-Contrôle-Audit, the International Journal of Accounting (Associate Editor), the Journal of Information Systems, the International Journal of Accounting Literature (India), De Computis – The Spanish Journal of Accounting History, and Financial Reporting (Associate Editor).

He has published books and articles in international journals in the fields of management and reporting of intangibles, international and comparative financial reporting, public sector accounting standards, accounting history, and social and sustainability reporting. Guest editor of a special series on “Accounting and Business Economics Traditions” for the European Accounting Review (1996-98), guest co-editor – with Prof. B. Lev – of a special issue for the European Accounting Review on intangibles and intellectual capital (vol. 12/4, December 2003), and guest co-editor – with Prof. Thomas W. Guenther – of a special issue for the Journal of Management Control on "Measuring and Managing Intangibles for Accounting Use" (2011).

Coordinator of an official Study for the Enterprise Directorate-General of the European Commission on “The measurement of intangible assets and associated reporting practices” (April 2003 – Institutional partners: Stern School of Business of the New York University, the University of Melbourne, and the University of
Ferrara).

Member of the High Level Expert Group on “Reporting Intellectual Capital To Augment Research, Development and Innovation in SMEs (RICARDIS)” of the Research Directorate-General of the European Commission (Report published in June 2006).

He has been an invited key-note speaker at OECD, United Nations, European Parliament, European Commission, and Chinese and Japanese Governments’ events.

Convenor of the 1st OECD-University of Ferrara joint International Policy Conference on “Intellectual Assets and Innovation: Value Creation in the Knowledge Economy” (Ferrara, 20-22 October 2005).

He is a founding member of the global network “World Intellectual Capital Initiative” (WICI) as well as of the network “WICI Europe”. He is the Chairman of WICI Europe.
